Arthur Lisle wrote an article for the Nov/Dec 1977 issue of the publication
"MUZZLELOADER" - it appears on page 34 of that publication, it reads in part.
"Last summer I purchased a book, American Engraved Powder Horns, by Stephen V.
Granesay, curator Emeritus of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
On page 74 of this pub was the name of my ancestor, William Yarrington - a
Revolutionary War Sergeant. Examining the horn revealed extensive and delicate
scrimshaw over the entire surface. The relic is worn smooth as silk and has
turned golden brown with age... around the horn is carved , William
Yarrington, August ye 4th, 1759". Glued to the upper part near the spout is a
small piece of paper with faded brown script that reads; "This horn was found
on the East Bank of Oyster Pond on (?) Point, Long Island, in the year 1818
embedded in the earth".
"... the director gave me a copy of a book with the history of the Yarrington
family. Mr. Hurley also supplied me with a report from the New York Historical
Society that may shed more light on my ancestor's military record."
