Notes for HENRY THOMAS THOMLEY, SR. by his grandaughter "Elsie Maureen Thomley"
My granddaddy (Henry Thomas Thomley Sr.) was an exceptional man. He was a very wise and kind man.
When granddaddy came to live with us he began to teach me what became some of the most important things I ever learned. He was just full of stories about the "old days". They all began with " A long time ago when I was just a boy", or "When I was young"---. He NEVER asked me to help him weed the garden, or carry in the wood for the fire in winter, or any other "work" that I hated doing, he just started to tell me about "back when" and he had all the help he needed. He got me EVERY TIME because I could never wait to hear the rest of the stories. Sometime, I would be angry because I had worked at something a half day, for at the time I was convinced that Mother would not have told me to do whatever that job was. Believe me, back then you had PLENTY of work to do without volunteering for any extra. However it paid off very well as I remember, because he always gave me money for recess or if I was going someplace special. He would tell me not to tell anyone he had already given me money (he meant my Daddy) so he would give me some more. Granddaddy could just break my heart and make me cry for days, because every time he bought new shoes he would tell me that would be the last pair of shoes he would ever buy. That just ruined my week. He must have done that for at least 10 years.
Granddaddy made ax handles. People came from a long way to buy them because he was meticulous about the wood he used, and how carefully he made them. He would keep the wood wet for a while and then he would dry it for a given time and only after all that would he make the ax handle. Sometimes it would fall to (Maureen's brother) Raymond (Clifton Thomely) to drive him around to sell them if nobody came to the house to buy them soon enough.
Granddaddy was liked by everyone he knew. He would leave home early in the day walking "to visit everybody". He would be gone all day, and would not allow anybody to drive him. He said he didn't want to miss any friends or family and that he never got tired because he stopped at just about every house he came to.
He was a religious man who went to Church three times a week. He raised 6 sons and 5 of them were much like their father in many ways. Granddaddy was very hard of hearing and beginning a couple of years after I got married he would ask me all along "girl (his name for me) when are you going to ahve us a baby? I tried to make him understand that I was trying to do that but he would forget and ask me over and over about it. It still makes me sad to remember that about 6 weeks after he died I became pregname with my daughter. How I wish he had known my children. Everyone needs a granddaddy like him.
Elsie Maureen Thomley
